Pucar谩 de Tilcara聽 – Archeological Site, Jujuy

This UNESCO World Heritage Site runs in a north-south direction for about 150 kilometers, flanked by the Puna to the west and the Yungas to the east.

Rio Grande (Big River) has made of the gorge an important commercial, social and cultural causeway for over 10,000 years, linking the high plateau and the valleys, and is still an important commercial route joining the Atlantic, the Pacific and the mountain region.

The Quebrada de Humahuaca was made an UNESCO World Heritage site on 2 July 2003.

Picturesque adobe houses and colonial churches nestle in the multi-colored, rocky mountain landscape. The towns in the Quebrada are well known for their rich cultural lifestyle, where the cult of Pachamama (Mother Earth), the folkloric music get-togethers (pe帽as) and a tasty culinary tradition are highlights. These features, along with the colorful arts-and-crafts markets make Quebrada de Humahuaca the main attraction of Northwest Argentina.

PURMAMARCA

At 65 km north from the capital of the Province of Jujuy, San Salvador de Jujuy, lies in the road towards the bolivian border the town of Purmamarca.

A quiet town in the colorful mountains of the north with colonial style arquitechture and fairs with traditional handwork clothing and pottery among other crafts and gastronomic offers.

TILCARA

The聽Pucar谩 de Tilcara is a pre-Inca fortification located on a hill just outside (approximately a 15-minute walk) the small town of Tilcara being one of the most important archaeological sites of the country.

The location was strategically chosen to be easily defensible and to provide good views over a long stretch of the Gorge of Humahuaca.

The Pucar谩 de Tilcara was declared a National Monument in 2000. It has been partially rebuilt, and is the only publicly accessible archaeological site in the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

The area features dramatic mountainous landscapes and rich aboriginal traditions, which make it a major tourist attraction with several nearby hiking tracks.
