Bariloche

THE LAKE REGION

The snow topped mountains and volcanos offer majestic vistas that contrast with the deep valleys, dazzling lakes and dense Patagonian forests that comprise this region. The Andes mountain range separates the humid forests of the Valdivia region of Chile from the arid and windy Patagonian steppes in Argentina, producing spectacular landscapes in the process.

On the hillsides of these volcanic peaks and on the lake coasts there are myrtle, larch, araucaria and pehuene forests containing some specimens over 3000 years old. These eco-systems, as well as a number of endangered species which inhabit them, such as the huemul, the condor, the puma and the pudú – the smallest member of the deer family – are protected by a chain of National Parks extending along the mountain range.

The region offers a wide variety of activities which include unlimited possibilities for trekking, mountain climbing, scenic hikes, sailing, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, cycling, playing golf, skiing and a wide variety of winter activities, all accompanied by an exquisite local cuisine and excellent wines.

Trekking through the forests, crossing the steppes, sitting at a lake shore or climbing a mountain…the Lake District invites travelers to take a deep breath and soak in the majestic nature surrounding them.

HIGHLIGHTS

BARILOCHE

Resting on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi itself and inside the national park bearing the same name, Bariloche is the flagship city of southern Argentina.
It was founded in 1902 and its most emblematic buildings were constructed in the 30s: the Civic Center, the Cathedral and the Llao Llao Hotel. A strong wave of Central European immigration also took place about this time and this European presence is evidenced by the Alpine architecture and excellent cuisine: smoked meats, sausages and cold cuts, beer, chocolates, marmalades and pastries.
The endless amount of things you can do here have converted it into the national Adventure Tourism Capital. You can go trekking, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, skiing, golfing and bicycling among others.
Don’t miss a boat ride on the deep blue lake, a visit to the remarkable Arrayanes forest and outings through the valleys and mountains with panoramic views that will leave you breathless.

THE 7 LAKES ROUTE

Route 40 snakes its way from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes between lakes and mountains, offering beautiful panoramic views along the way.
The first stretch, along the Lake Nahuel Huapi shoreline, is swept by winds blowing in from the Patagonian steppe. When it reaches Villa La Angostura, a charming summer township, the road immerses itself in the Andean forest.
The route passes alongside the Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Escondido, Correntoso, Espejo and Lácar lakes. The singing of birds, the shimmering waters, the forest trails and the backdrop of snow topped peaks all come together in this wonderful natural scenic route.

LANIN NATIONAL PARK

This park takes its name from the Lanin Volcano, situated north of Huechulafquen Lake, on the border with Chile. Its perfect 3776 mt high cone is visible from anywhere in the region and can be climbed in 2 days.
This area is famous the world over thanks to its fly fishing, especially in the Chimehuin River. It is also a paradise for photography lovers and flora and fauna watching, particularly given the surprising changes in landscape from season to season.

SKIING

The skiing season on Cerro Catedral runs from about June to September, shifting every year according to the climate. Its infrastructure, the diversity of slopes and the number and variety of services available for travelers, make it the most important ski center in Argentina.
It offers more than 120 kms of slopes for all levels of difficulty as well as skiing and snowboarding classes for all ages. Other interesting activities include treks with snowshoes, descents on sleds, excursions on snow bikes and cross-country skiing.
The Cerro also offers a wide sampling of delicious foods and accommodations are available on-site or in Bariloche, just an hour’s bus drive away.
